$600 Ubuntu Edge – Dual Boot Android & Ubuntu OS Phone 4GB Ram / 128 Gb Storage

Personal computing in a smartphone, the Ubuntu Edge provides that by having the options to run the Android OS and Ubuntu OS in the same device and taking the personal computing to the next level. The Ubuntu Edge project from Canonical has gone live seeking for funds, after being listed on Indiegogo with the total expected funding of $32 million.

When you talk of viewing the content of the smartphone on the larger screens, it’s the HDMI and some advanced technology options, but the Ubuntu Edge would make things easier with the Ubuntu phone when connected to the monitor would convert into a fully usable Ubuntu PC with all the possible functioning.

As the Edge is still in the planning and funding process, the team has listed a few expectations and the details about the smartphone in the making, where one could see around 4GB of RAM, multi-core processor and about 128GB of storage, which makes it something which matches the normal PCs. But it’s good to know that the screen size is kept around 4.5 inch and the resolution too is not too high, as the makers are not thinking to have a pixel density of more than 300 PPI.

As said above, the smartphone would have both the operating systems and the Dual-boot option would give the users an option to select between them, and have the Ubuntu OS helping them to view on the larger monitors, and use the device as a computer. The design though is not at all appealing, the main reason one might want to have it is for the productivity.

We had got the demo of the Ubuntu OS for the smartphones, and it was all looking great at the CES 2013 where the Ubuntu team had demo’ed it on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and since then, we had some big expectations with the new OS, and now finally there are signs of it with plans which are over the expected levels.

Want to get the Ubuntu Edge? the expected date of production and shipping of the smartphone is around May 2014, and here’s where you need to go to fund the project and get your device when it is actually manufactured.

The cost starts from $600 (one day only offer), and the $830 pricing is for just the smartphone and then there are some enterprise packages too costing $10k and $80k where you get multiple devices with additional stuff and support. Is it a product worth the price? for us, it’s something new in the world of smartphones where dual-booting was a challenge and possible only on the computers, and thus the Ubuntu Edge is something worth a try.
